What Is A Shortwave?



Shortwaves are smaller than longwaves troughs and have a counterclockwise kink to the height contours, They are associated with an upper level front or a cold pool aloft and can generate positive curvature vorticity and positive shear vorticity

How Does shortwaves look like?


Shortwaves often represent Baroclinity in the troposphere (WAA and CAA) and are imbedded within the long waves trough- ridge pattern.

Shortwaves are best located on the 700 and 500 mb chart / prog  Rising motion occurs within the exit sector of a shortwave. Their size and influence ranges from the mesoscale to the synoptic scale and can move twice as fast as longwaves.

Who First Created shortwaves?

Guglielmo Marconi, 1st Marquis of Marconi was an Italian inventor and electrical engineer, known for his pioneering work on long-distance radio transmission. in 1909 Marconi received the Nobel prize for creating the Radio and shortwaves, Marconi also invented other electronic devices, he died in 1937.
